![]() The picture centers on the relationship between a young boy (Oakes Fegley) and a gigantic green dragon. It's a terrific and unabashedly emotional entertainment. It is an excellent example of an indie director being given the keys to a big-budget offering and both knocking it out of the park and creating a picture that is in tune with that filmmaker's own sensibilities. In a season filled with disappointing or outright lousy would-be blockbusters, this unassuming and subversively low-key character drama is a reminder that strong characters and an emotional story worth telling are the most special of effects. ![]() If Suicide Squad is this summer's proverbial Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend (at least on opening weekend), then Pete's Dragon may be the proverbial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the two big August releases leg it out and close the summer together. ![]() ![]() Yes, Robert Redford will be a hook for older moviegoers, and it's the last big movie of the summer (unless Ben-Hur surprises), so if it can open I imagine its legs will be exceptionally long. ![]()
